first road work that went late and three motorcycles that went down on some uneven maevement after that. nothing like that today. they wrapped up the road work well ahead of schedule we're in the green. a little stackup in the cash lanes for either side of the bay bridge toll plaza. no metering lights yet. we should be clear of those for about 20 more minutes. >> alexis, thank you. the arrest of the golden state killer is sparking new hope this morning that other bay area cold cases may be solved. that includes the notorious zodiac killer. >> police in that case are trying to trace dna and hoping it leads them finally to a suspect. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live in san francisco. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. the zodiac killer attacked people from here in san francisco all the way to vallejo. all those investigators say they're still determined to catch him. they have now turned to these letters to try and find the answer. they're going to try to pull dna off of these letters. this is according to "the

sacramento bee." police have letters from the zodiac killer and they're going to take the dna from those letters and they have sent it to a private dna lab to try to create a genetic profile of the killer. that's what official recently did to try to find the golden state killer. using public dna data bases for criminal cases is relatively new. the police working the zodiac killer case hope to have the dna results back in the next few weeks and create that profile and trace it back. the zodiac killer is believed to have killed five people in 1968 and 1969. police think he is probably dead, but they still want to find out for sure who he was. they say police -- agencies from san francisco to vallejo to napa are all still working together and committed to closing this case. now they're even turning to non-traditional techniques to try to get this job done. live from san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thank you. meanwhile in today's gma first

look, the golden state killer is due back in court. >> joseph de anglo accused of 12 murders and accused of sexually assaulting dozens more, now there are chilling new details about his time as a police officer from the man who fired him. here is abc's diane ma sado. >> reporter: accused serial killer joseph deangelo is expected back in court. his defense attorneys attempting to block investigators from collecting more dna, fingerprints and photographs from specific parts of his body. >> guilt, some embarrassment. i just wish he could have been stopped a long time ago. >> reporter: former auburn police chief fired him in 1979 for stealing dog repellant and a hammer. >> the investigator told me that joseph had gone to my house one night to kill me and said he walked around the house looking

the area. i will let you know as soon as we get an update. happening today, a teenage driver accused of hitting a police officer will be in court. >> investigators say she hit an officer as he crossed eddy street two weeks ago. she left the scene and was arrested a short time later. the officer has been released from the hospital. hayward police want to track down this guide dog. investigators say wilton disappeared yesterday morning. the 5-year-old black male lab was last seen in castro valley on redwood road near proctor elementary school. if you happen to have seen him, call hayward police. we are learning the military car go plane that crashed in georgia was on its final flight. nine members of the puerto rico national guard died yesterday. it was on its way to be retired in arizona when it crashed on a highway near the airport in savannah, georgia. it flew humanitarian missions

after a hurricane hit puerto rico last year. an investigation is under way to try to figure out why it went down. a salvage operation turned into a rescue for two men thrown into the pacific. >> sky 7 was overhead yesterday afternoon as a crew tried to salvage a boat that had run aground. the two workers connected lines to the boat, but the boat sank and tossed the men into the water. >> my guys did exactly what they were told to do in that situation, which was go overboard and swim away from the wreck. >> rescuers from the coast guard pulled the men from the water. pacifica officials and the boat's owner have to plan their next step. you are never more than seven minutes away from my accuweather forecast. let's talk temperatures along the east bayshore. we've got 51 in el sobrante and oakland and alameda about 53. on the other side of the bay,

low to mid 50s from san francisco down to san jose and los gatos. let's talk about what's going to happen today, at least plan your day out if you want to get outside and enjoy the weather. activity planner, yard work, strong sunshine. watch out. you could get burned if you're going to be doing that. at the coast, chilled sunshine. we'll see almost as much as we did yesterday. in the hills it's broez si, but it will calm down this afternoon. east bay valleys, 54 and mainly cloudy at 8:00. by 10:00, already seeing sunshine and 60. up to 66 at noon. look at the afternoon hours from 2:00 to 6:00, total sunshine. low to mid 70s. in the south bay pretty close to this. 55 and mainly cloudy at 8:00. sunshine by 10 clog and 60. 66 at noon. as you go through the 2:00 to 4:00 hour, near 70 at 6:00.

absolutely. you would expect that this time of year. what to look forward to, how about wild temperature swings up to 10 to 15 degrees. i'll show you that coming up. i just got new video coming in from india. there have been devastating storms there. 81 people are dead. it is making international headlines. i have pushed pause. watch closely here as these folks all of a sudden -- this tree comes crashing down. it's really incredible. this is the scene all across northern india. the death toll has continued z to rise overnight. these storms have really been pounding them. a lot of victims in rural areas, mainly from collapsing trees. india's prime minister is on twitter sending out condolences to families this morning. it's unclear how many people were injured as well. this death toll could rise. i'll keep my eye on things for you.

>> authorities have released new body cam video of the worst mat shoes shooting in modern american history. as you know, a gunman killed 58 people and injured more than 500 others in las vegas in october. >> the new video shows the s.w.a.t. team clustered in the hallway outside the sniper's room. no cents of what they'll find when they blow down the door. >> breach, breach, breach. >> reporter: that deafening explosion. one body camera >> i think it might be a camera. > reporter: the officers gingerly entering the suite. but the deadliest mass shooter, surveying the scene, the high powered rifles resting on a chair. 23 rouchbds ultimately found. by the time the officers arrived at the 32nd floor, creeping down the hallway, dripping with

sweat, going low behind their shields. >> take a deep breath. >> reporter: paddock was already dead. he shot himself after he gunned down 58 innocent people and wounded hundreds at the concert playing out down below. >> what's most striking about seeing those first three hours of this body camera footage is how much time elapsed. you see the officers going floor to floor methodically. we see them breach the wrong rooms and more than six months after this attack, we still don't have a final police report. no timeline and no firm understanding of why stephen paddock did this. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. we want to warch you again this morning about eating romaine lettuce. the first death reported in the e. coli outbreak. it did happen here in california. health officials have not yet released any other details about the death. we know at least 121 people got sick in 25 states.

at least 52 had hob hospitalized. the bad lettuce was traced back to yuma, arizona, where 90% of lettuce in the winter is introduced. the two men arrested in the philadelphia starbucks last month are speaking on gma after reaching a settlement. this video of their arrest has been seen by more than 11 million people. the two men were there for a real estate meeting. the two settled with the city of philadelphia for a dollar. they said starbucks has made a commitment to change company policy. >> the most important thing is the foundation. the fact we have a seen at the table to work on reforms to be included. hopefully other it will follow. >> you can see the entire interview are robin roberts with the two men on gma at 7:00 a.m.

a new report recommends san francisco transportation officials reduce the number of taxi medallions to revitalize the industry. they found there are 12 times as many ride hails through service like uber and lyft. the report says local cab drivers are making historically low wages because of an over supply of taxis. it recommends they create a new regular category for taxi companies to manage the number of cabs sent to sfo. in a week you'll be able to access the bay bridge bike path 4 hours a day. it's currently only open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. they say now you'll be able to walk or bike from oakland to your bow buena island. that goes until may 19th at 9:00 p.m. don't know when a decision will be made to keep it open

67 degrees. 59 at half moon bay. let's go down to the south bay where we have temperatures 74 at san jose to 76 in morgan hill. my accuweather seven-day forecast, the temperature spikes tomorrow, holds back saturday and sunday, spikes again monday. >> good morning. we're really looking good so far today. we did have a minor issue in oakland northbound 880 just before you get to high street. several dollars into chp about metal poles in the slow lane. they were there, chp was able to clear them and that is no longer an issue. golden gate bridge, southbound 101, the zipper trucks have been through. very light commute if you're coming from marin county and some drive times southbound 680, highway 4 to walnut creek, westbound 580 tracy to dublin we don't have anything blocking but we or at an hour solid. you are in the red.

cleaning up oakland. mayor ruby schaaf says it's time to crack down on people who have inundated the city with garbage, requesting $500,000 to hire three litter enforcement officers. their job will be to analyze illegal dumping and trace its source. it's a big problem around the homeless encampments. people can call 311 to report it. have you noticed something different in the castro lately speaking of trash? five of these smart waste recent curveballs are installed. this is on market across from the castro theatre. they can store five times as much as normal trash cans and have fancy castro branding on them. essentially they're trash compactors. san francisco mayor mark farrell says he'll be out to talk about these new trash cans. a san francisco play grund is closing for a few days in preparation for a $3.2 million

keller with what was at stake and what the board finally decided. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. this vote came about three hours ago, at 2:30 in the morning after hours and hours of debate. in the end, the fremont unified school district decided the ex-ed curriculum will be taught here, just not to all students. here is how the vote went. they voted 3-2 for the curriculum for seventh to ninth graders, but 3-2 for fourth through sixth graders. hundreds showed up last night to speak out. >> it is masked as safe and healthy. it is dangerous. >> i implore you not to deny access to this critically important sexual health content to the students and families who want and need it. >> reporter: the curriculum is called the three r respect and responsibility. seven years ago they decided t

teach pstarting in fourth grade. the board's vote this morning means no sex education will be taught until seventh grade. parents still have the choice to opt out. live in fremont, matt keller, abc 7 news. federal officials have released a detailed report and new video you have to see about a very close call at sfo in july. it's pretty scary stuff. >> really frightening. take a look at the video. it shows an air khan dap flight may have come as close as ten feet from hitting a philippines airline jet, seconds away from triggering what would have been the worst aviation disasters in history. the jet flew towards a taxi way lined with other planes waiting to take off. there's a jet on the taxiway. a pilot was incredulous.

a couple their wedding photos that he took earlier on the same day of the theft. two robbers in sonoma's county eighth home invasion robbery involving marijuana. the robbers stormed the home on primrose in unincorporated santa rosa. one man came through the front door, the other through the back. at least one pulled out a handgun. that's when they tied up a man who was inside. the robbers stole an undetermined amount of marijuana and left in a newer model gray van. 110 oakland schools will get new water fountains to replace old ones found to contain lead. money from measure hh will help pay for the fountains. the new water fountains should be installed over the summer. b.a.r.t. is trying to clean up one of its san francisco stations after a video showing rampant drug use went viral. >> this video was taken by a b.a.r.t. rival. it shows drug addicts shooting

giuliani told fox news the president reimbursed his attorney for the $130,000 paid to porn star stormy daniels. giuliani says the payment was made shortly before the 2016 election as part of a non-disclosure agreement stemming from stormy daniels's alleged decade-old affair. the white house and the president has repeatedly denied if affair. this morning on gma, dan abrams says giuliani's admission proves the president's legal team that robert mueller already knows this. >> they know in particular after the raid of michael cohen that mueller knows exactly what happened with that payment. they also know that mueller knows why donald trump fired james comey. they've talked to a lot of people who were there at the time. i think at this point they're saying let's get this out there. when it comes out later, just as chris says, where it's not going to be a surprise, not going to be news, let's put as much out there as possible.

ferry ride today, clouds and sunshine. mass transit cool this morning to pleasant this afternoon. mid to upper 60s on the peninsula from 2:00 to 4:00, down to 65 by 6:00. we start off with cloud cover at 8:00 and 53. notice by noon we're already sunny, but the clouds start coming back at 8:00 when you need that jacket for 58 degrees. a look at the north bay, a little cooler this morning, starting with 49 at cloud cover. i haven't seen any reports of thick fog this morning. clouds hang around a little longer. sunshine by noon at 60. jump to the mid to upper 60s from 1:00 through 6:00. by 5:00, clouds start to roll in to 55 degrees. so far, a lot of good news for you? >> hoping we don't jinx it here this morning. no major incidents so far. we are hoping to hang on to that. i do want to head out to the tracy area, a solid line of red leaving tracy. we have a couple of reports according to our partners at

waze that we have a disabled big rig on westbound 205 between mountain house and 580. it's not a certain thing but we have slow speeds. we always have slow speeds out of this area. down to eight miles an hour behind that possible issue. up to 13 once you make it to 580 and towards altamont pass. we'll see if we can get an answer on that one. other than that, typical slow spots filling in, including the bay bridge toll plaza. the metering lights on at 5:22. typical delays building through the maze. drive times in less than ten minutes. from our live desk, a really big international headline. abc news is now reporting talks are under way regarding the release of three american citizens detained in north korea. one of them is 62-year-old kim charges three years ago.pying -

these talks come a week after north korea's kim jong-un met with south korea's president. they are seen as a further attempt by north korea to soften its image. there is speculation that those three men detained could be released sooner rather than later. in fact, last night president trump tweeted about those detained men hinting that they could win their release very soon, so we will see if that happens sometime today. san francisco's police chief said last year he's not using this job to springboard somewhere else, but a new report says he may be moving on. also, how about owning a bed and breakfast in the middle of the ocean. you can, and it will cost a fraction of the price in the bay area. >> i bet there's a catch. take a look at muni's new logo. we want to hear from you, go to abc7news.com/vote. let us know if you love it, if

58 in eureka. 79 in sacramento. 72 today and sunshine in yosemite. here is my accuweather forecast for tahoe, average high is 60 degrees. we'll be warmer than that every single day with even 70s possible monday and tuesday. that snow is melting fast. now a live desk update from abc 7 mornings. >> i want to give you brand new information on that explosion overnight in connecticut that left eight police officers hurt. i have learned that at least six of those officers are hospitalized right now. lts new at 5:00 a.m., i learned it was a barn on the property that exploded. if you're just waking up with us, this explosion happened in north haven connecticut. police are responding to a hostage situation. a woman claimed her estranged husband was holding her for three days. when police got there, the barn burst into flames. the wife was able to escape unharmed. the officers' injuries are non-life-threatening.
